Here’s the thing about HIGHLIGHTS, they display the distinct features of your course, make it stand out from others and give a perfect place to accentuate the uniqueness of your course.
Previously, through a series of blog posts, I have shared some vital points which you might want to go through : 4 tips to get your course title right and How to make your course page more effective with a good subtitle.
‘Course Highlights’ is the third important attribute you should consider while designing an effective course page.
What are ‘Course Highlights’?
While creating a course on WizIQ, you can write 5 highlights (70 characters each) about your course. Don’t fail to make use of this space. Here are 10 points you should consider while writing the course highlights (with examples):
Who will benefit the most from this course?
Don’t assume anything. Highlight whom the course is for and why! For example, for a course on developing Windows Azure™ and Web Services, the course highlight would be:
“Benefits .NET developers & prepares you for Microsoft Exam (70-487)”
What do learners get in the course – number of classes, lifetime access to recordings, tutorials, videos etc.?
Details of classes, tutorials and tests validate what you are saying and appeal to the left brain of the learners by helping them quantify what they get. For example, for a course on Hadoop Administration Training the course highlight would be:
“Get 18 LIVE Classes with ample hands-on practice”
Is this a certified course? Who issues the certificate?
Highlighting this will make your course easily identifiable to those who look for certified courses. For example, for the course on Online Certified Course on Vedic Mathematics, the course highlight would be:
“Get professional certification by Vedic Math Forum India”
Do you teach something unique?
If your course is rare you may expect to be well in demand. For example, for a course on Tantra Initiation, the course highlight would be:
“The first course of its kind to help you channelize your energy”
Does this course help people prepare for a specific exam/certification?
Maximize the purpose of your course by specifying if your course helps to prepare for any exam or certification.
Example: For the course on Microsoft® SharePoint® Search 2010 for Application Developers the course highlight would be:
“Makes you competent for taking Microsoft Exam (70-573) & (70-576)”
Are you super qualified?
If you have exceptional qualification related to the course you are offering, it would give your course credibility. For example, for the course on Quantitative Aptitude for GMAT, GRE, CAT, IBPS the course highlight would be:
“Qualified teacher | 99.83 percentile in CAT 2011 | National Sudoku winner”
Are you super experienced?
“Experience is the best teacher”-adding a relevant experience will add trust.
Example: For the course on Gaming 101 : Production, Graphics and Release, the course highlight would be:
“Gaming wizard | 15 years of coding experience in developing games”
Have you taught somewhere special?
It is more convincing if you have a premier international/national exposure. For example, for the course on Tips to Build Your Career as a Basketball Coach, the course highlight would be:
“The instructor has worked as the coach at Marquette, Miami OH, Iowa State”
Have you had a great success record / student ratings?
This is the greatest proof of your efforts and would attract the crowd almost instantly. For example, for the course on UPSC IAS Sanskrit Paper : Full Syllabus Coaching, the course highlight would be:
“The instructor has produced 28 civil servants; 5 were even rank holders”
Is the course available at a special price?
This is the chief factor for a learner to make a choice. If you have some opening offer or any promotional scheme, highlight that. Example: for the course on Crack Group Discussion / Personal Interview (GD / PI) the course highlight would be:
“The course is delivered at a highly economical price”
Here are some more examples that you can refer to when writing ‘course highlights’:
Learn the open source software project Hadoop at rock bottom price
Benefits Database developers, programmers, BI developers and DBA’s
Your instructor is PMP Certified & has 10 years of teaching experience
Ideal for Hadoop Administrator Certification CCA-410
Also perfect for Hortonworks Hadoop Administrator Certification
SAP modules with authorizations and codes available 24*7 with technical assistance
Every topic is covered with unique case studies, exercises and assignments
While your title and subtitle are like your elevator pitch for the course, your course highlights are the 5 things you’ll mention next in the conversation.
