21st Century Skills: Conversation on WizIQ

Teaching Online Using WizIQ

21st Century Skills
What skills do you think about when you think of the future? What role will formal schools have in preparing students for those skills? Are schools ever going to catch up or will schools stay behind? Education is important to everyone, yet, what can parents, students, teachers, administrators, and governments do?

Teaching to the Test
The goal of most schools is to teach and test knowledge. But, is that enough? Are test taking skills one skills that we want to instill in our students? Will the skills be applicable for them as adults? I totally share the following statement from 21st Century Schools website. “Teachers today are stressed by the current state of affairs in education, and many feel that they do not have the time to design and deliver a 21st century curriculum. They feel pressured to teach to the test, putting their students and themselves through a regimen of memorizing huge amounts of facts so that they can pass their standardized tests. One teacher at a recent on-site workshop commented that she felt like a robot”

Time for a Change
Many of us would agree that it’s time for a change in the education system. Charles Fadel is taking the initiative. He may not have a background in education as many teachers may claim, but he has the passion and care needed to bring change. I had the honor of interviewing Charles on WizIQ.

Conversation with Charles Fadel, “What should students learn in the 21st century” WizIQ had the honor of having Charles Fadel, a global education thought leader, author, and inventor, on WizIQ Conversations. Charles Fadel is founder of the Center for Curriculum Redesign; visiting scholar at Harvard, MIT, and Wharton/UPenn; senior fellow, human capital at The Conference Board. He is a co-author of the best-selling book “21st Century Skills – Learning for Life in our Times”. Charles has worked with education systems and institutions in more than thirty countries. He was formerly Global Education Lead at Cisco Systems. Charles holds a BSEE, an MBA, and five patents.

Charles Fadel & 21 Century Skills
Charles talked about the future of education in the K-16 sectors. He mentioned the curriculum that we should be following. One of the key points in the new program that he advocates is relevance and skills that will be useful for the future. Application is key for learning. One of the problems in today’s knowledge-based focus is the lack of relevance. Students need to understand why they study what they do and how they can apply the knowledge in their current and future lives.
