As technology touches almost every aspect of our lives, we find ourselves living in an environment where interaction with technology products and software systems is inevitable, and rightly so. In today’s technological landscape, one of the most intriguing facts is that these products and systems are used by the multitude. Therefore, what we are looking at is a variety of people who use and respond to these entities differently based on their abilities and various other factors.
Perhaps, one of the greatest challenges that stare in the face of the designers of software systems and technology products is to deliver a uniform experience to a large and diverse human population. If gauged properly, this humongous task can even be a daunting one at times.
Section 508 Compliance
When it comes to individuals with disabilities, ensuring accessibility of software and delivering an optimized user experience through assistive technologies is crucial. With that in mind, we recently upgraded the WizIQ Virtual Classroom to make sure that it complies with the Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act. According to the Section 508, electronic and information technology should be easily accessible to the disabled individuals, thereby providing them with opportunities that are available to others.
The WizIQ Virtual Classroom ensures Accessibility for All
The recent upgrade entails that the WizIQ Virtual Classroom can now be easily accessed by the blind and visually and mobility impaired individuals. People with these disabilities simply need to install JAWS, a screen reader from Freedom Scientific ®, on their Windows-based computer to get voice prompts for various buttons and features in the Virtual Classroom. The voice prompts help them navigate the Virtual Classroom and perform various tasks with ease.
In addition, several keyboard shortcuts (refer to Figure 1.1) have been introduced to launch features and applications with just a few keystrokes within the Virtual Classroom. The individuals can use the Tab key on the computer to navigate the Classroom easily. Tabbing can allow the users to move between different buttons or features. These enhancements have considerably increased the accessibility of the Classroom for the disabled.
The Section 508-compliant Virtual Classroom reflects WizIQ’s belief of creating equal opportunities for all individuals and giving them a level playing field. This upgrade is also in line with WizIQ’s commitment to designing software products that make a difference in people’s lives.
