Say goodbye to audio/video delays ~ WizIQ needs 32% less bandwidth now

“bandwidth is such an issue. it always lets us down.” ~ a sad teacher

I am an employee turned user of WizIQ Virtual Classroom and I face similar issues like you do. Issues related to audio/video streaming which happen to be the essence of online education. If you can’t hear or see your educator clearly, learning online isn’t much fun. Everything has to be in sync for an exceptional, real time experience on the virtual classroom. More often than not, the Internet connection is to blame. But then again, anything that is online is sure to consume your bandwidth. So I figured the only way to solve this; buy a higher bandwidth (read: more expensive) Internet connection.

Recently (and thankfully) however, things started getting better and I had fewer issues with the audio/video streaming. There was less or no delay and I was happier. To dig up matters, I went to the expert to give me an authentic technical insight into the new improvements that were being experienced in the virtual classroom. This is what he said:

“ So here is what has happened. Previously the Codec [don’t fret if you don’t get it, I didn’t either] that we used, consumed too much bandwidth, around 267 Kbps for a/v streaming. So we switched to a better option. The new Codec is called H.264 and it needs only 182 Kbps. Almost 32% reduction in consumption. That’s a lot! ”

But does this Codec work with all Flash Players?

“Good question. And the answer is NO! H.264 Codec is relevant to updated versions of Flash Player. If you are using a 10.3 version or older, you won’t be able to avail the benefits. I would advise all the users to upgrade to 11.0 or a newer version. Its not a thing to worry about though. More than 90% of our users already have the latest versions of Flash Player. As for Android users, they would need to re-install the WizIQ App to enjoy an uninterrupted and improved Virtual Classroom experience.”

Whoa. So I don’t have to buy a new Internet connection?

“And it doesn’t end here. The final file of the session that teachers make available for learners would take half the time to download. If previously the file size was 185 MB, it is only 110 MB now. 39% reduction in file size! I think that’s a great step towards improved user experience. We are delighted to announce it! ”

Hear Hear!! This is great news for all teachers and students. No more worrying about bad quality or delayed audio/video streaming. Unhampered learning and a satisfied you! Hooray for the Virtual Classroom Team and H.264 Codec!! (I think it could have a cooler name than that. Something like “No Crap Codec”).

  1. First of all I would like to say superb blog!
I had a quick question in which I’d like to ask if you do not mind.
I was interested to find out how you center yourself
and clear your head prior to writing. I have had trouble clearing my mind
in getting my ideas out there. I do enjoy writing however it just seems like
the first 10 to 15 minutes tend to be lost simply just trying to figure
out how to begin. Any suggestions or hints? Many thanks!

  2. Hi, I have used WizIQ for a few years now, and I have to say that I still experience audio lag, even with the new WizIQ App. Hence I have been using Skype for the voice communication, but wish I didn’t need to.
Is it there any way of using Skype within WizIQ?

    Thanks,
    Daniel
