4. Empathic Education
5. Innovative Teachers

Teaching is an Art
Teaching is a personal process and teachers know that. Teachers look at the eyes of their students and know what to do. Great teaching connect with their students. They have the skills to perform here and now.

Great Teachers
Teachers who stay in the teaching profession are great because it takes passion, care, enthusiasm, and a willingness to stay by the learners even when the school system makes the task unbearable at times. Great teachers allow students to learn. What makes great teachers?

Teaching Effectiveness
Bill Gates wanted to find out what makes great teachers perform at the highest level to cater to the dictates of teaching to the test. The Measures of Effective Teaching (MET) project was funded by Bill Gates for the purpose of learning what makes a great teacher and how to help teachers evaluate their teaching performance and that of their colleagues. The idea behind the project was to learn by observing teachers in action. The MET project took place over a three year period. The project included 3,000 teacher volunteers from six different school districts, experts from the education field, and researchers.

Goal of MET
The goal of MET was to learn about effective teaching, how to evaluate it, and develop programs to train teachers to be effective. Some of the questions the project raised were:

  1. Is it possible to measure teacher effectiveness?
  2. If it’s possible to measure teacher effectiveness, how to you measure it?
  3. What qualities does a great teacher have?
  4. How do we measure those qualities and skills?
  5. How do we teach others to develop the skills needed to be an effective teacher?

Measuring Effective Teachers

Schools are Responsible
Schools should let teachers focus on learning and not on content and exams. Teaching should be allowed to connect, inspire , and teach students to learn, and not only be expected to deliver content. According to Martin Heidegger (What is called thinking) and Carl Rogers with Jerome Frieberg (Freedom to Learn), teachers should be free to let students to learn.

Teacher Performance vs. Test Performance
Is testing effective? It seems that testing is effective for quality control, but of what and of whom? Professional athletes need to improve their physical performance and get the highest scores they can to be able to compete and win championships. But is that what we want from school children? Do we want our students to turn into machines so they can improve their test scores? Is school and education about performing better on tests?
