Teaching a Live Online Class
Teaching in a live online class is all about learning. Every class must cater to students’ learning needs. It’s not enough for a teacher to teach, present, or share information. Students need to be able to use the information in meaningful ways. One way is to schedule their own online class on WizIQ and share what they’ve learned with others worldwide.

Tools Required and Information Sharing
Teaching online requires certain tools and good skills of communication. Information sharing is a must in a live online class. The teacher or moderator of the synchronous class needs to know what is happening with the attendees of the class.

Audio is a requirement in a live online class. The attendees of the class need to hear the speaker and view the content. The moderator needs to know whether his audio and/or webcam are functioning, so that he can be heard and viewed. The ability to share information on the use or misuse of the tools is essential throughout the session of a live online class.



Tools In an Online Class
The tools available in an online class are enabling if everyone is able to access them during the live class. The tools include a whiteboard, writing tools, chat box, polling, the ability to share audio, video, breakout rooms, recording the class, and screen sharing capabilities. The option of recording a live class is essential for the sustained learning and for those who could not make it to the class.

Attitude and Mindset
I’ve been teaching online using both synchronous and asynchronous modes since 2004. The live online class connects my students and me for learning on a personal level and not just for information sharing. Enthusiasm is a key attitude in getting students to believe and trust the teacher online and face-to-face, but specifically online. There may be technical issues during the class. The only way to keep the students focused regardless of the technical issues is to encourage and create an atmosphere of trust. The teacher’s enthusiasm will facilitate and help the participants engage in what’s important; learning.

Service Teaching
I am able to serve my students better because of our live online connections through the virtual class. Learners need to connect with not only the content but with their peers and teachers as well. Having a positive connection with a teacher makes learning more engaging and meaningful for students. Having a personal connection with a teacher contributes a great deal to the learning process.

Connecting for Learning
I view my students as partners in learning. Just as an entertainer would be nothing without an audience, I would have no role as a teacher without students. I focus all my energies on my students. I want to be able to facilitate their learning. I need to learn about their needs so I can be of help. Once the students trust me, they are able to share their learning needs. Connecting in a live virtual class allows my students and me to connect for learning.
